December 2010: 2010 Favorite USEF Breed Competition Winners Announced
CALAHA won the 2009 USEF Breed Competition Award and, as a result, all our exhibitors were treated to a delicious Ice Cream Social (courtesy of USEF) at our 2010 Regional Show. In 2010 we tied for first place with the Rocky Mountain Iberian Horse Club. This award is only two years old and we have been a winner both years. Way to go!!

Release: December 21 2010
Author: USEF National Affiliates Department

Lexington, KY- December 21 - Two first-place ties in this year’s “Favorite USEF Breeds Competition” attests to the competitive nature of the equestrian sport—and the success of the second running of the United States Equestrian Federation’s one-of-a-kind contest.

In 2009, USEF announced the new contest designed to let members vote for their favorite breed competition while awarding and promoting USEF licensed breed competitions that ran a show so well that exhibitors wanted to call it their favorite. The contest also gives exhibitors the opportunity to provide detailed feedback about the competitions to USEF.

This year, USEF members again stepped up and provided more valuable input than the organization receives on a yearly basis about the competitions members are attending. USEF received nominations for several competitions in many of the breed categories and plenty of positive accompanying feedback. USEF is pleased to announce the winning competitions for each breed and to share some statements from some of the exhibitors:

Breed - Competition - Comments
Andalusian/Lusitano

IALHA REGION I CHAMPIONSHIP (tie)- Staff is so friendly and helpful. The show is very well run and organized. The trophies are incredible and everyone has a great time.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN IBERIAN HORSE CLUB ANDALUSIAN SHOW (tie) - The RMIHC club that hosts this show is very dedicated to putting on a fun inclusive and high quality competition.

November 2010: CALAHA-IALHA MEMBERS HONORED BY USEF
Please join us in celebrating the achievements of two of our own Nadine Tilley and Lauren La Vine, who were recently informed they are in the running for the 2010 Equestrian of the Year honor awarded through the United States Equestrian Federation.

Nadine Tilley, who has been active in the IALHA and the Andalusian breed for decades, has been named the recipient of the Bill Robinson Award. This prestigious award is presented to an equestrian competing with horses or ponies across all the breeds in harness or for driving performance in non-international competitions. Nadine has been a proponent of the driving discipline for over thirty years, from the show arena to open driving competitions and combined driving events. Known for her sharp turnouts, she is a recognized figure at the IALHA Nationals and Regional Championship shows and has knocked the socks off spectators and fellow competitors. Showing in a variety of open competitions this year, she has taken the Andalusian to an even higher level in the public’s eye. At the 2010 National Championship show, she presented four Tilley Andalusian bred horses to four National Championships, all in different driving divisions. A passionate supporter of the Andalusian and IALHA, Nadine has served the IALHA as an officer, director, and has assisted in leadership roles too numerous to list. Tilley Andalusians is located in Hemet, California, where Nadine breeds and trains her equine athletes.

Lauren is the inaugural recipient of the Vaughan Smith Trophy, added to the USEF Pegasus Awards in memory of a remarkable equestrian who made tremendous contributions to our breed and Association. Lauren began riding at 3 months old, while sitting in front of her mother. By the age of 4 she had graduated to riding in parades. At 9, she participated on her first drill team. For the past 13 years, Lauren has been professionally training horses. She teaches all breeds and most disciplines, but especially loves working with Andalusians. She has served on the IALHA Board and has chaired our Youth Committee as well as headed up the High Point Awards program for the IALHA. This Vaughan Smith Trophy is particularly meaningful for Lauren because the man whom it honors was her mentor and best friend and she is quick to explain that she has gotten where she is today because of his guidance and caring. Lauren currently trains at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, California.

The winner of the Equestrian of the Year award will be selected from the eight finalists this year. The award will be presented to the winning equestrian at the annual USEF Convention held in Lexington, KY in January.
